Renting a car overseas can be an overwhelming experience with all the rules of the road. Maybe it is not understanding the language, the signage on the roads or worse yet, driving on the opposite side of the road in countries like the United Kingdom, but one of the things you may not have thought about is whether your US driver’s license was even valid in those countries. The answer to this question is generally yes, but there are other requirements such as insurance. There is one additional item you may not have thought about, an International Drivers Permit, also known as an IDP, a simple translation of your driver’s license information in several languages, recognized in most countries in the world by international convention and easy to get at your local AAA office for around $25.00, valid for one year.
However, if you find yourself already traveling internationally and realize that you need one or decide you want to rent a car at the last minute, and the country you are in requires one, and there are many, you certainly can't just drop into your local AAA office, so this service of which I am an affiliate is here to solve that problem.
